History of the Town: -
Crude oil was discovered here in late 19th century. Digboi is known as the Oil City of Assam where the first oil well in Asia was drilled. The first refinery was started here as early as in 1901. Digboi has the oldest oil well in operation.[1] With a significant number of British professionals working for Assam Oil Company until the decade following independence of India, Digboi had a well-developed infrastructure and a number of bunglows unique to the town. It has eighteen holes golf course as part of the Digboi Club. It has guest houses and tourist residential apartments laid on Italian architectural plan to promote tourism in upper Assam.

In Digboi, the climate is warm and humid. In winter, there is much less rainfall than in summer. In Digboi, the average annual temperature is 22.9 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2499 mm. The climate of this place is similar to the rest of the state. Digboi experiences a sub-tropical monsoon type of climate, with the year being divided into 3 basic seasons namely - summer, monsoon and winter.

There are many ways to reach Digboi. The nearest airport is the Mohanbari Airport, Dibrugarh and the nearest railway junction is the Tinsukia Junction. One can get flight to Dibrugarh from Delhi and Kolkata on daily basis. Also Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani express runs daily from Dibrugarh via New Tinsukia Junction. There are also proper roadways which link the Digboi Oil town to some other towns like Duliajan, Makum etc. Digboi has got a railway station and it connects well with Guwahati. Digboi can be reached by public transport bus and mini-vans as well. Various companies run bus between Digboi and other neighbouring towns and Guwahati. Rickshaw, E-Rickshaw & Auto Rickshaw are the main mode of transport within the city.
Demographics: -
The city is home to about 22 thousand people, among them about 11 thousand (50%) are male and about 11 thousand (50%) are female. 96% of the whole population are from general caste, 3% are from schedule caste and 1% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Digboi Municipal Board is 8%, among them 50% are boys and 50% are girls. There are 4643 households in the city and an average 5 persons live in every family.
